July 19, 2010 - After meeting with Dr. John Capinara and Extension Agent Ed Jennings, it was determined that although the grasshopper population looks huge, little damage is actually being done.  The adults will lay eggs soon and a new generation will appear in about a month.  Keep your eyes open for the nymphs.

July 13, 2010 - Agents Jennings and Strickland are investigating reports of large numbers of American Grasshoppers in pastures in eastern Hernando County and Pasco Counties.  If you have a large number of these please click the link below for more information.

June 10, 2010 - Look out for bacterial spot and bacterial speck of tomato.  This is usually the reason that the bottom leaves of the plant turn yellow and die.  This will spread to the top of the plant and reduce your harvest.  Control this disease by spraying a copper based fungicide and avoid overhead irrigation.

I've got ___ acres. What can I grow? Print

This is a question that I receive almost daily.  It is also a difficult question to answer.  It is similar to having someone else decide which car you should buy.  I ask the potential farmer/rancher a few questions of my own.

1.  How much time do you have to devote to your agricultural enterprise?  Some agricultural endeavors will cancel your vacation plans for years to come.

2.  How much capitol do you have?  Some of these enterprises can be quite expensive.

3.  What interest you?  You should really love what you're dreaming about doing.

4.  Is there information about what you want to do?

5.  Is there a market for what you want to produce?

Thinking about putting your land to work for you? Find out how to begin:
